I try to start each class period with: "Good morning/afternoon, friends. It's great to be with you today." I do this instead of "Be quiet, sit down, settle down, etc." If they're especially rowdy, I just turn up the volume on my greeting. And the funny thing is, it always works! I just keep saying positive things until they're settled and ready for class. Thanks for a great post! Stumbling it for you. I try to follow this advice as a high school teacher.
