You can do anything with the “right” motivation

Sometimes you have trouble beginning a project because you don’t see it’s feasibility. Sometimes you have trouble beginning a project because you can’t envision the completed project. Sometimes the project is just so large and complicated that the logistics make it a nightmare.

How do we create the atom bomb?

These were some of the issues facing the U.S. government before WWII, concerning the potential of splitting the atom (ie – creating an atomic bomb). Before WWII, most scientists understood, at least in theory, the potential power that could be unleashed by splitting the atom. However, explaining this theory and then constructing an understandable model for the non-scientist politicians to visualize, posed huge obstacles.

We need to create the atom bomb first

Part of the problem in conveying the feasibility of an atomic bomb lay in the fact that although science had proved theoretically by mathematics that the project could be done, no one knew how to do it. There were many seemingly insurmountable hurdles to cross in order to reach the goal of producing an atomic bomb, but the seriousness of beating the rest of the world ( our enemies ) to production proved to be the impetus we needed to motivate us to figure it all out.

The “right” motivation moves you

What is the point? Well, it seems that if you can provide the “right” motivation, no project is beyond the scope of your attainment. For example, if I asked you, “Would you like two free tickets on an all expense paid cruise through the Bahamas?”, most of you would say emphatically, “Yes”.

Would you change your mind if I said, “The cruise ship pulls out tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. sharp from the port of Miami”? Surprisingly, a large percentage of people would simply quit at this point because getting to Miami by 8:00 a.m. would simply be too much trouble. However, for those truly interested in going on a free cruise to the Bahamas there would be nothing that could stop them.

These people would be motivated. They would begin by making a list of all the things that must be accomplished before they could depart to Miami.

  • find someone to watch their pets
  • get the car serviced
  • get time off from work
  • notify friends and relatives
  • etc

Then, they would get busy doing the items on their list. With the “right” motivation:

  • we can learn to optimize our time
  • prioritize our tasks
  • reach our goals

This being the case, it is not our abilities that hold us back, but our lack of motivation.

In our lives, we must be motivated to accomplish our goals. Just as the U. S. government left no option except the production of atomic weapons to our scientists, we too, must require better and more of ourselves. Otherwise everyday will be a carbon copy of the status quo “lives of desperation” that we live today.

Expect more from yourself. Accept no less.
